three blind wolves

Today, the Scottish band Three Blind Wolves arrives in The Netherlands for their first full band tour. Last year, in May, lead singer Ross Clark already crossed the waters for a first impression. We recorded this session a few days after his sold out show at the Onder Invloed afterparty at UROCK Cafe.

During the filming of 'Emily Rose' we accidentally passed a on-going wedding at the Oudegracht and Ross, accompanied by fellow Scottishmen The Seventeenth Century, decided to serenade the bride. It was something special. You had to be there. Since you weren't, you can watch the video below.

For the coming Dutch live shows of Three Blind Wolves; check underneath the videos.

damien jurado

It's almost a year ago, when we invited Damien Jurado to get on a boat with us in Utrecht. Since then, his wonderful new album 'Saint Bartlett' was released, a must-have for all of you. We had a little preview of this album when he played new songs during this Canal Session.

He also played 'Abilene', a song I heard for the first time a couple of years ago, being covered by the Dutch musician Solo. Michiel Flamman (Solo) went along for the boat ride and helped with the audio, and he will also support Jurado at his show at EKKO, Utrecht next Tuesday.

A selection of the songs Jurado played in between talking about the history and sights of Utrecht, are online now. We weren't the only ones who loved his session, seen as the blog post his wife and manager Sarah Jurado published on her blog: "I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a movie set, an idealized concept of Europe. Not outlandish or whimsical, but strong + solid. It was enormously comforting. ... I will miss Utrecht, more than a little."

- Arkansas
- Pear
- Abilene

davie lawson

This April, the documentary 'No Windows Without Walls' on the British musician Davie Lawson premiered at UROCK Cafe in Utrecht. We took this opportunity to get Lawson on a boat and record this session. Earlier this month, Lawson was recording his third album, which based on the rough recordings will be another brilliant album, and on this session he gave us the scoop on two of the new songs.

Accompanied by Doghouse Roses guitarist Paul Tasker and percussionist Ro Halfhide, he played:

- Annie #2
- Country Song
- The Weight Of The Wait

seabear

In the end of May, the Icelandic band Seabear toured Europe and were willing to drive up to Utrecht from Paris earlier than planned to record this session. On the sunny afternoon before they played EKKO, on Saturday the 22nd of May, they played three songs:

- Wolfboy
- Leafmask
- Arms

Oi Va Voi

The first session we ever recorded was with the London-based Oi Va Voi, who were playing the sold out Tivoli Oudegracht later that day.

It was the ideal tryout, early Summer or late Spring, sunshine everywhere, people sitting and drinking at the canal and the lively music of Oi Va Voi.

They played:

- Long Way From Home
- Dusty Road
- Waiting

Coparck

Coparck singer Odilo Girod decided to end the band's excistence earlier this year. Tomorrow, Thursday the 29th of April 2010 they'll play their last ever club show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.

On the 16th of October 2009, they played at EKKO in Utrecht and in the afternoon we filmed this session with them on the Oudegracht. They withstood the cold and windy weather and played three songs from their fourth and last album A Dog And Pony Show:

- I Guess
- The Moonset
- New York City Lights

Please enjoy this very first Canal Session!

Others on the canal sessions

"We had the rare opportunity to see much more than the standard venue/hotel/road tour of a city. Damien was asked to perform in a boat along the canal, to be videotaped and featured on a new site launching next month. (thecanalsessions.com) I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a movie set, an idealized concept of Europe. Not outlandish or whimsical, but strong + solid. It was enormously comforting. I started calculating the costs for another round of tickets to Amsterdam, to return for vacation. I think I thanked everyone at the venue three times. I meant it. Ekko was like home; the booking there was extraordinary. I would haunt the place if I were around more. We’re already looking forward to our next visit, be it on tour or on holiday.

Today, a day off, and a drive back to France. This time our destination is Nantes. Soon there will be photos. If we are lucky, there will be naps. I will miss Utrecht, more than a little."

- Sarah Jurado, manager of Damien Jurado

On the 28th of April we published the first ever session on this website. We filmed the Dutch band Coparck in October 2009, who had just released their fourth album and have since then unfortunately decided to split up. We feel honoured and very happy we had the chance to film them for The Canal Sessions before that. Enjoy!
